Set high on the mountainside looking out over Lake Biwa, Iwamadera has a quiet and gentle atmosphere of a secluded place that does not seem to have been touched by modernization. The feminine energy of the temple is enhanced by having the only female abbot on the pilgrimage. Although a comparatively small temple, there is a rich energy here of sacredness, especially in the three magnificent deified trees and the meandering gardens. The local bus only comes here on the 17th of the month, when there is a special ceremony for prevention of senile dementia, for which the temple is famous.
