About Miidera:
Like Ishiyamadera, Miidera is spread over the mountainside overlooking Lake Biwa. Although the temple has always been a major Tendai training center, the pilgrimage temple Kannondō is set apart from the rest of the complex because in 1481 it was moved down from its former location up on top of the mountain so that women might be permitted to visit the temple, which was otherwise off-limits to them. You can still get the feeling of being a pilgrim from olden times when you climb the steep stone pathway that marks the route the women pilgrims have taken for centuries.
