Known as the ‘Winners Temple,’ Katsuoji is an important center for pilgrims of many faiths, not just the Shingon sect to which the temple formally belongs. Situated high in the mountains overlooking Osaka, in any season the gardens are spectacular and it is an entry point to the primeval forests and waterfalls of the wonderful Mino National Park. All around the grounds you will find little figures of Daruma, a traditional Japanese talisman of determination and success that represents the 5th century Zen patriarch Bodhidharma.
