About Matsuno-odera:
Matsuno-odera is a quiet rural temple set high on Mt Aoba, “Wakasa Fuji”, overlooking the wild and rugged northern coastline. Far from busy cities and towns, the temple has gentle faded elegance that is very charming. There is no public transport going to the temple, and the long walk from the train station up through the primeval forests of Mt Aoba really feels like a pilgrimage from days gone by. At the temple you feel again as though you have stepped into another time with the only sounds being the ticking of the old clock in the temple office, which also serves as the local post office, and the splash of the turtles as they plop into the lotus pond.
